On Thursday, May 26, 2011 Mike Campbell, author of Communications Skills for Project Managers will be a featured panelist for Knovel’s expert webinar: Generate Better Project Results – Learn what holds projects back and how to succeed.
Mr. Campbell is recognized internationally as an expert on project management, change management and communications. He and his company, MCA International, specialize in business transformation projects in both large and small companies. He has been published in industry magazines such as the Journal of Petroleum Technology and Hart’s Energy and has been a featured speaker at the Project Management Institute’s Global Symposium as well as conferences hosted by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).
K Exchange: In your book Communications Skills for Project Managers you pose the question “Why isn’t good Project Management enough?” Can you briefly tell us what your answer to this question is?
Mike Campbell: The key to the answer is the outcome. All projects are sanctioned to produce a business result. Too often, project managers and their teams, focus on the technical aspects and lose sight of the business goals for the project. Therefore, a project can be a technical success and a business failure.
KX: In your experience, what is the most difficult part of Project Management?
MC: Actually, I think the most difficult part of project management is dealing with people. We have software programs that automate a lot of the tasks that were pretty tedious in the past, but those programs have nothing the helps us with our interactions with people. And I believe the best skill a project manager can develop for people issues is communications.
